Students of Cultural Studies participated in the School of Media Ethics in Sarajevo

Students of the Cultural Studies study program at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zenica, visited Sarajevo, where they participated in the educational program School of Media Ethics, organized by the Press and Online Media Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It is an intensive multi-day program that brings together students of journalism, communication studies and related social sciences from different parts of BiH, with the aim of strengthening knowledge and skills in the field of media ethics, media rights, responsible reporting and professional standards in journalism. Special emphasis during the school was placed on familiarizing with the work of the self-regulatory body – the Press and Online Media Council – which allows citizens to file complaints about unprofessional media reporting, while respecting the Press and Online Media Code of BiH.

The school's program also included interactive workshops, analysis of real media cases, and discussions on the limits of professional and unethical reporting. The participants had the opportunity to learn from experienced journalists and editors from various media houses, and to learn more about the challenges of the profession first hand.

Students' participation in such programs further enriches the educational experience at Cultural Studies, offering them the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real media contexts, while developing professional ethics and critical thinking about the role of the media in society.

Students say about the program:

Nejla Varupa, 2nd year student of Cultural Studies:

– At the School of Media Ethics, I had the opportunity to listen to lecturers who work in various fields of journalism, and to learn about what their working day looks like – whether they work on radio, television, in newspapers or online media. The focus of this education was ethical journalism. We gained insight into how the Press Council and online media of BiH function, and analyzed specific media headlines and content in the context of professional standards.

Sani Kapetanović, 4th year student of Cultural Studies

- The School of Media Ethics was a great opportunity for us students to learn a lot about media and journalism. The lecturers had a unique perspective on the topics we discussed, sharing their many years of professional experience. The possibility of practice in the media, which this school offers, is especially valuable, which makes it not only theoretically useful, but also practically oriented.
