The Department of German Language and Literature was founded in 2004/05. year and applies the provisions of the Bologna Declaration according to the 4+1+3 system.

After completing the first cycle of study lasting eight semesters (240 ECTS), the student receives the title of Professor of German Language and Literature, after completing the two-semester second cycle of study (60 ECTS) the title of Master of German Language and Literature, and after completing doctoral studies, the title of Doctor of Humanities for a special specialization (linguistics, literature or methodology).

In accordance with the European reference framework for learning foreign languages, it is foreseen that students must learn two foreign languages in their curriculum, and in some schools three, as well as a foreign language as an optional subject. Therefore, our graduates find work relatively easily. From conversations with students who studied at our department, we know that they are employed in primary and secondary schools, schools for learning foreign languages, in publishing houses, as translators and in the economy.

There is close cooperation between the BiH and German employment bureaus, on the basis of which our students have the opportunity to go to Germany every year to work on a holiday. The department also cooperates with various organizations, such as the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the ZE-DO Canton, the Federal Ministry of Education and Science, the Goethe Institute, DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), BHDLV (Bosnia-Herzegovina Association of German Teachers languages), SOEGV (Association of Germanists of Southeast Europe), German Embassy, Embassies of Austria and Switzerland, Departments of German Studies at universities in BiH and the region, ALBA Zenica, which includes various projects in which our students participate as well as DAAD scholarships for which they apply our students. Our department also participates in Erasmus student exchange projects (Erasmus plus).

Teaching at the Department is supervised by professional staff: permanent professors, assistant professors and senior assistants as well as visiting professors from the universities in Sarajevo, Mostar and Tuzla and the University of Osijek (Croatia). In the academic year 2015/16. In 2008, the entire winter semester was taught by a visiting professor from the University of Bayreuth (Bavaria, Germany). The teaching staff has excellent communication and cooperation with students, which is confirmed by the results of the evaluation by the students.

The department has its own library equipped with professional literature, so that all basic and supplementary literature required for study and provided for in the curriculum is available to students. The book fund is continuously increasing, and in this sense it is planned to install a library with a reading room at our faculty.
